POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
割烹うおたけ
Located near Hirano Shrine, Uotake serves thoughtfully composed Japanese meals, from fragrant garlic chicken and unaju to seasonal fried specialties, paired with delicate small dishes and rich red miso soup.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked into a quiet residential neighborhood close to Hirano Shrine, Uotake is a Japanese restaurant offering authentic, unpretentious dining in the kappo tradition. On the 1st floor, a warm wood-toned counter sets an easygoing rhythm, equally suited to a quiet solo lunch or a restorative pause during a day of sightseeing.
Among the midday set meals, the garlic chicken has earned a loyal following. Lightly charred chicken brings deep, roasted aromatics to the table, backed by delicate, dashi-rich side dishes, carefully cooked rice, and a fragrant red miso soup accented with myoga ginger. Fried seafood shifts gracefully with the calendar: light, crisp hamo (pike conger) appears across spring, summer, and autumn, while the winter months welcome thin-battered fried oysters, both accompanied by tartar sauce.
Freshwater eel is another house signature, broiled with care to showcase its tender texture and brightened by aromatic sansho pepper. Diners can choose from a range of presentations, including an unaju set served in a lacquered box and a special una-don topped with a fluffy dashi-rolled omelette. The menu also extends to luxurious indulgences like Kuroge Wagyu steak sets, fresh sashimi, and guji (tilefish) fried with its scales delicately crisped. In the evening, the dining room eases into multi-course kaiseki meals paired with chilled or warmed sake and wine. Before heading out, consider picking up a package of chirimen sansho—simmered baby sardines with Japanese pepper—to enjoy at home.
